Why a C-Section May Be the Best Option for You

Cesarean or a C-section is a type of surgery that involves making an incision into the uterus to give birth to a baby. For some women, a vaginal birth just isn’t possible and may cause complications for both the mother and the child. If your doctors have advised you to go through a C-section, it doesn’t mean that you have failed your pregnancy or that you are a bad mother. There are a lot of valid reasons why some women need a C-section.

What is a C-Section and How is it Done?
There have been records and tales of pregnant women who were cut open when they were unable to deliver the baby, especially if the mother is dying or has just died. Some historians claim that Julius Caesar was born through that process, while others point out that it was one of his ancestors who had a Cesarean because Caesar’s mother survived childbirth. There were other accounts of successful operations in which the mother survived, but the most reliable records came from the procedure performed by Jesse Bennett in 1794 and by James Barry in the early 1800s.

Today’s C-sections are a lot safer than the previous methods. The mother has a team of specialists who continuously monitor her vital signs. She is also given an intravenous tube and a catheter is inserted in the bladder during the preparations. The doctor will then make a incision on the lower part of the abdomen, usually near the bikini line, and then again in the uterus. Once the newborn is removed, the doctor will remove the placenta before closing the incisions.

What are the Reasons for Performing a C-Section?
There may be times when a planned vaginal delivery might not be a good option for the mother and the child. This is why some doctors constantly remind expectant mothers to prepare for an emergency caesarean even if there are no problems leading to labor. An emergency cesarean may be necessary for the following reasons:

• The mother has a medical condition that might cause complications (cardiovascular issues, diabetes, or is overweight/obese)
• The mother has pre-eclampsia or eclampsia
• The labor is long and slow; or the cervix has not fully opened, making vaginal birth very difficult
• The mother is bleeding heavily during labor
• The mother suffers from uterine rupture, which means that the scar from the previous C-section has torn
• The baby is in a breach position or lying in a bottom-down position
• The baby is in a transverse position or is lying sideways

• The baby’s position keeps changing or is unstable
• The baby’s vital signs are critical and needs to be delivered right away
• The mother has a low-lying placenta, called placenta praevia
• The mother suffers from placental abruption during labor, which can be risky for the baby
• The mother has a prolapse of the umbilical cord, which means that the cord has slipped ahead of the infant and could possibly cut off the oxygen supply
• The mother has a history of difficult labor/childbirth or has had a C-section before
• The mother might have difficulties delivering twins or multiples

The attraction of old board games such as chess and go stem from the fun, competitive playing field they offer as well as the variety of moves you can come up to beat the opponent. The oldest recorded board game was Senet in First Dynasty Egypt, but people have been playing with the dice long before that.

Traditional board games can be as addictive as all the other electronic games but they have digital versions nowadays too. Now that’s timeless!

Mancala has different variations but the goal is to count and capture pieces usually made up of pebbles or seeds. Two players take turns playing on a board with pits to try to capture as many pebbles from each other. It goes by different names in parts of Africa, South and Southeast Asia and the Caribbean.

Checkers or Draughts
This fast-paced game probably originated in Mesopotamia when a board similar to the one used today was found in the city of Ur. It remained popular but it was only in 1756 when the rules for Draughts were written that it became a competitive game worldwide. There are many checkers variants today such as Chinese, Spanish, and Turkish checkers.

This board game from Madagascar has become popular ever since it was featured in Assassin’s Creed 3 along with Checkers and Nine-Men’s Morris. There are three versions of the game depending on the size of the game board. All the black and white pieces are prearranged and the players take turns capturing the opponent’s pieces first by moving them forward or backward.

The game was probably invented during the Qing dynasty in China. Mahjong gave rise to other card and board games such as Rummy, as well as its Korean and Japanese variants. It can be played by up to four players. The objective is to take turns drawing tiles to create sets by removing identical tiles or pairs.

The earliest form of the game was found in Iran dating from 5,000 years ago. Two players take turns rolling the dice to determine the movement of their pieces (known by various names such as chips, pips, checkers, etc.) The objective is to try to remove all of your pieces first before the other person does.

Nine Men’s Morris
The game began in the Roman Empire and requires two players to take turns moving pieces on a checkered board. First, they place all the pieces pieces on the board until they can form a horizontal or vertical row of three identical pieces to remove a piece from an opponent until all the pieces are gone or blocked from moving. There are three other variants, namely; three-men’s morris, six-men’s morris and twelve-men’s morris.

This game is popularly known today as Snakes and Ladders. Its primary goal was to teach morality by punishments and rewards. Climbing the ladder meant that hard work was rewarded, while the snakes brought down the sinners.

What Can You Have If You Start Saving a Dollar a Day

Saving money can be quite hard if you are not used to having money saved in your account. It doesn’t matter if you are getting allowance from your parents or you are earning money yourself, saving a dollar a day could change your life.

The Basics of Saving a Dollar
For a whole year, imagine saving up a dollar, how much does that leave you with at the end of the year? Well, exactly 365 dollars! Imagine that? 365 dollars for you to save but just a dollar a day. A dollar a day isn’t that hard to save. In fact, it could be loose change to some people. But then again without noticing it, you’ll be able to come up with 365 dollars and that is definitely a big deal.

The goal is to save bigger and bigger as you then earn more and more and the only way to do that would be to start right away. In your first year, saving up 365 dollars might not be such a big thing but it is definitely a good start.

Incremental Savings
Imagine on your second year you increase your savings to two dollars per day, what would that end up with at the end of the year? 730 dollars. If you did not spend your 365 dollars from your first year and decide to put it together with your 750 dollars, you’d have 1,115 dollars in total! And that’s where you can actually buy something of greater worth.

Whether investing on something or just keeping your money within your savings, imagine how you started with just a dollar a day. The idea is to increase your savings as you start to earn more. Imagine starting with one dollar a day increasing your savings by a dollar per year for a total of five years. Imagine how much money you would save.

How Much You’ll Have in 5 Years
It may be hard to believe but you would actually be able to save 5,495 dollars in a span of five years! Now that’s a lot of money for just a passive lifestyle. It might not even be noticeable. Of course this still isn’t too much, but if you start with a dollar a day all the way to 10 dollars or even more, imagine how much money you would actually save.

The measurement of wealth isn’t actually in how much you make but rather in how much you save and at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter if you have had a hundred dollar dinner, if you do not have money left in your account, you still wouldn’t be able to make progress.

The Merlion is a symbol of Singapore that is made most popular to not only the locals of Singapore but also the tourists around it. The Merlion is a majestic symbol of a head and torso of a lion without the arms and the tail of a fish. This symbol has been the representation of Singapore for quite a while now.

The Origin of the Merlion
The question we all ask is, “How did the Merlion even come about?” Well, to answer that question, we should look back at Singapore way before she has become one of the rising first world countries of today. Singapore back then used to be nothing. In fact, most of Singapore was built instead of actually being there in the first place. Singapore even had to buy soil just to make land.

Hard to believe looking around and seeing how sophisticated and huge Singapore is today. Back in the day, Singapore started as a port. A port where ships from all around would conduct trade. And if trade was conducted in a certain country, that country automatically benefits. Here’s the crazy part, Singapore used to be on top of water!

Singapore is an Island
That’s right: Singapore wasn’t just a trading place, it was actually a place where most of their establishments were above direct water. Since you are surrounded with water, what does that say of your livelihood? Well, you are correct. Fish! The early Singaporeans didn’t have farms at all, they just had boats. They would live off of what they would find in the water.

This also helped Singapore to expand in influence and as Singapore become richer and richer, Singapore started to become powerful at the same time. Now this is why the Merlion is the Perfect symbol for Singapore. Because it incorporates a huge piece of history which has made Singapore what it is, and has also represented the strength and power of Singapore.

History and the Future
The bottom half of the Merlion gives reverence to Singapore’s history while the upper half gives revelation of Singapore’s power and strength to charge into the future. You may find the Merlion symbol all around as it is not used to attract tourists, but it is also well celebrated among locals.

Singapore has had no plans to change the Merlion as it has been agreed to be a perfect representation of the country in itself. Singaporeans display the Merlion with pride as its statue stands tall and proud on the Marina Bay Sands. The Merlion is a reminder of not just Singapore’s ability to survive, but also Singapore’s power. She may be a small country, but a force to be reckoned nonetheless.

How to Speed Up Your Business’ Trademark Registration Process

Trademark registration doesn’t just happen at the blink of an eye. If you seek to register trademark for your business endeavors, the first thing you must keep in mind is that the process might take you awhile. Sometimes it takes about several months. In some cases, it may also take a few years. The length of your wait may just depend on your application.

There is no hack to effectively hasten the trademark registration process. You can’t pay ‘special’ fees just to get your case on top of the pile. There are laws and regulations which must be orderly followed – so it’s better if you have tons of patience prepared amid the process.

Regardless, there are still some steps you can take to increase the possibility of an early brand registration in Singapore. Doing so will likely allow you to get a trademark just after a few months, in contrast with a few years waiting time. It involves thorough research, ample preparation time to come up with a solid application, and delivering prompt responses.

Here is an additional guide on how you can get a registered mark as quickly as possible:

1. Choose a strong mark

For your brand name to be considered trademarkable, it must first be distinct and unique. Allot ample time in brainstorming possible trademark names. This is an important process according to brand mark Singapore if you want to rightfully protect your brand. Choosing a weak mark is an unwise decision for your business. Not only will you be vulnerable to Office action, but your registration will also be delayed (or worse, denied).

On the other hand, distinct marks are easier to trademark. Made-up business names such as ‘Microsoft’, or a word which isn’t directly associated with your products and services like ‘Apple’ computers can be easily trademarked. This is one progressive step towards protecting your company’s intellectual property.

Discuss your options with a legal attorney and later assess the strength of your chosen trademark.

2. Avoid using a confusingly similar mark

If your brand name is made of generic words, chances are there’s already an existing company which uses a similar name with yours. This poses a likelihood of confusion between both the parties involved and the general consumers. A confusingly similar mark can also lead to having third parties who might actively oppose your trademark registration, hence further delaying your application.

To avoid being in this situation, research for similar trademarks from the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore’s online database. If you find an existing trademark which is closely like yours, it might be best to pause your plans to register TM for a while and effectively come up with a new brand name.

A thorough research is better conducted with the additional help of business directories and personal office appointments. For legal assistance, it is also encouraged to seek the expertise of a trademark or copyright attorney.

3. File for your application ASAP

In Singapore, registered trademarks enjoy extended statutory protection under the Trade Marks Act. Any registered proprietor is capable of available remedies in the event of trademark infringement (rightfully acknowledged by the Singapore law). If you want to rightfully protect your business from infringement and other copyright violations, it’s best to register trademark as soon as possible.

In the absence of a legal registration, a mark may still be considerably protected under the Singapore common law ‘tort of passing of’. This kind of protection may be difficult to obtain, though, as it requires an established goodwill and pleasant reputation from the owner.

4. Submit an accurate and complete trademark application

Submitting an inaccurate or incomplete form might result to your application getting returned to sender. If you fail to properly identify the specific goods and services that can be associated with your trademark, then you might receive an Office action pertaining to a procedural or technical problem with your application. These problems effectively slow down your trademark registration process.

In some cases, you will also be required to send an acceptable specimen of your mark especially if it’s of non-conventional nature. Trademarks such as three dimensional (3D) signs/shapes, holograms, and sounds can be registered under Singapore law. However, trademarks based on taste and scent cannot be legally recognized.

To avoid wasting any of your precious time in the long run, it’s best to work with a reputable company from Singapore like http://www.brandmark.sg/ and to take your time in filling up the application. Do a double-check, or even a triple-check just to ensure every field is rightfully filled. Always choose the correct type of goods and services and follow all the subsequent instructions for submitting a specimen and picture of your trademark.

5. Respond promptly to any Office Action

Should you receive a letter or any mail from the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (or other related offices), take note that your trademark application won’t budge any further until you respond. Your application will technically put on hold. You will be given ample time to respond – which usually lasts for about six months in most countries. Accordingly, the sooner you respond to the office inquiry, the faster your application will be likely processed.

Don’t be hasty in submitting your response, though. Some issues might require complicated legal arguments which you’ll be better off discussing with a lawyer first. Be sure to respond fully and completely to each of the issues presented in the Office Action, or you might receive a final Office Action that further limits your avenues for responding. Seeking the help of a trademark/copyright lawyer is highly encouraged to save yourself from the trouble.

No one likes to talk about parasites, but a lot of them can thrive in our bodies. Not all parasites affect the body negatively, but an infestation can lead to diseases.

1. Tapeworms
They live in the intestines for up to 25 years and can be acquired through contaminated food. They can survive for a while after they are excreted in the feces and need one or more hosts in their entire life cycle.

2. Flatworms
They can enter the skin through contaminated water and live in the bloodstream. The host may not experience any symptom for years. Too many of these will damage the liver.

1. Ascarids
These spaghetti-like nematodes can be acquired by ingestion. The eggs live in the intestinal walls and make it to the bloodstream. They travel to the lungs, are coughed up and then swallowed back

2. Hookworms
They can be acquired through contaminated food and water. The larvae thrives in the intestines and take the blood. An infestation can cause a type of anemia called anchylostomiasis.

3. Filarias
These are passed on by mosquitoes and live in our bloodstream. In some cases they cause filariasis and elephantiasis.

4. Pinworms
Also called threadworms, they lay their eggs around the anus and cause itching. So when you scratch with your bare hands, you’re aiding contamination.

5. Whipworm
They live in the intestines for almost five years and are common in warm areas where they are passed through infected feces.

1. Scabies Mites
They lay eggs on the skin after the parasite is transferred through physical contact. That is when the itching starts. If not treated, it can develop into scabies.

2. Lice
There are three types of lice that can live on the human body. The most common is the head lice which can be passed by direct contact. The eggs are called nits and are stuck to the hair strands.

3. Bed Bugs
They live inside or near mattresses and feed on human blood. They can survive for years and are very difficult to remove. An infected house usually needs to replace some furniture.

1. Microsporidia
These are spore-forming fungi usually associated with HIV and other immune deficiency illnesses. They can be transmitted through inhalation of the spores or through contaminated water.

2. Entamoeba histolytica
Known for causing amoebiasis, they usually spread through fecal contamination. They are also found in water, vegetables and fruits.

3. Trichomonas
This protozoan is transmitted through sexual contact and live in the urethra. They cause no symptoms among men but women may experience itching.

4. Toxoplasma gondii
If you consume undercooked meat, these parasites can invade your central nervous system and cause flu-like symptoms. They also reproduce in the intestines of your cats.

5. Cryptosporidium
Called crypto, it lives in water and can survive even chlorine treatment. They can cause diarrhea.

6. Giardia
The Giardia lamblia is a protozoan that lives in the intestines. It survives in water and when it travels up to the gut may, it causes inflammation. There are other protozoans also common in the intestines.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are frowned upon by many people who find them unpleasant to look at. While they don’t cause significant problems by themselves, they’re worth checking out, as they could be symptoms of other medical conditions.

Causes and Symptoms
Varicose veins occur more commonly among females and is hereditary in nature. Pregnant women often have them during the first trimester because of hormonal changes. Others develop varicose veins during puberty and menopause. Leg injuries, obesity and standing for an extended period can also cause the veins to appear swollen.

There are no noticeable symptoms except the appearance of more noticeable veins under the skin. They will look like bruises but in the form of lines. The pressure on the veins, which function as passageways of the blood towards the heart, will make them wider.

Veins in the Legs
They often appear in the calves because there is more pressure on the lower body. Reticular varicose veins, which are red and grouped closely together, often appear around the ankles. Trunk varicose veins are thicker and nearer to the skin surface. These are the bulgy veins.

Varicose veins in the legs usually form in the greater saphenous vein (from the ankle to the back of your thighs) and the lesser saphenous veins (from the Achilles tendon to the back of the knees). While branch type veins appear below the knees. Varicose veins can also appear near the genital area.

Veins on the Cheeks
Sometimes thread or spider veins also appear on the face. Called telangiectasia varicose veins, they are red and blue veins grouped closely together. Besides hormonal changes, they appear because of damage to blood vessels.

Possible Problems
There is a possibility that the pressure on the veins will cause the skin in the ankles to change and become ulcers. Inflammation of the veins might be caused by clotting of the blood in the veins. Another possibility still is deep vein thrombosis, wherein the blood stagnates in the veins when the legs become inactive. Thrombosis is very rare, however.

Varicose veins don’t have symptoms but other people may feel slight pain in and heaviness of the legs. However, these can be confused with the following diseases: arteriosclerosis, lumbar disk herniation, erythema nodosum, lymphangitis, chronic venous insufficiency, livedo reticularis and others.

To avoid developing more noticeable veins, never sit or stand for extended periods. If your job requires you to stand or sit for hours, wear support or compression stockings. Avoid wearing high heels or staying still for long periods of time.

Getting rid of bad lifestyle habits can also help reduce the appearance of varicose veins. Losing weight can help. Exercise and keep hydrated.

If the veins are very noticeable, you can try other treatments such as sclerotherapy, YAG laser treatment, intravascular treatment or endovenous laser, and radiofrequency occlusion.

In sclerotherapy, a concentrated saline solution is injected into the vein. YAG laser causes the superficial blood vessels to collapse and then seal. Intravascular therapy involves inserting a laser fiber into the vein to deliver laser pulses. Radio-frequency occlusion delivers radio frequency into a vein through a catheter.

Every licensed plumbing contractor are also obliged to follow the rules of the state regulatory board, undergo complete background check, have a liability insurance and pass a licensing exam. Simply put, hiring a certified plumber will give you confidence that they know what they are doing, and provide you a recourse should something go wrong.

Licensed plumbing contractors like fast super plumbers undergo extensive rounds of training before becoming a certified master plumber. In those trainings, these plumbers are required to know the latest tools, study various piping materials, as well as the range of systems including drain, gas, sewer and water lines.

In order for an individual to become an efficient plumbing contractor, he should be trained enough to know which pieces fit together and where all the parts go. Some states require receiving a basic coursework along with passing a plumber licensing test, while others call for continuous studying of education courses to stay updated on the latest equipment upgrades, safety concerns and billing codes.

With their expert installation services, you can be sure that your plumbing system will work just fine.

6. Gives a Detailed Diagnostic Report

Receiving a detailed diagnostic report is one of the known benefits of hiring a licensed plumber. It is not unusual for certain plumbing problems to be caused by an underlying factor – and professional plumbers in Singapore are trained to examine plumbing systems, identify the root cause of any given issue, create a detailed diagnostic report of the problem, and fix it. This detailed diagnostics lets you know exactly what part of the system is being replaced or repaired.

7. Saves You Extra Money

While you may think that performing plumbing repairs on your own saves you money from time and labour fees, doing DIY repair job actually ends up costing you more in the long run. The time you spend on attempting to fix these issues is the time that you will not be using to perform more important tasks. Plus, it’s also possible that you will make some costly mistakes as you start performing the necessary repairs. You might end breaking things and causing more damage to your plumbing system. In contrast, calling in for the plumbing services of a skilled contractor will help in minimizing repair errors and costs from unexpected material purchases.

Whether you are planning to hire a regular plumber or someone who can provide 24 hour plumber services, it’s always best to seek for recommendations from your family and friends. Remember that you can never go wrong with a recommendation that you got from someone you trust. So hire a professional plumbing contractor and prepare to bid goodbye to your plumbing issues.
